Some of these officers have been run down in their cars, attacked with axes and their houses have been set fire to.īrazil has the potential to be the first environmental super power, the first nation to grow rich from its natural resources without destroying them. There is roughly one officer per 10,000 square kilometres, but it’s terrifying work. The government has about 800 officers tasked with enforcing laws against deforestation. As a result, environmental protestors are being murdered purportedly by armed thugs hired by illegal loggers – and this has resulted in a lot of pressure for the government to cave in on environmental protections. In desperation, these people will back any economic development over green concerns. The push toward deforestation comes because Brazil is still a developing country that is worried about feeding its growing population and preserving its export capabilities. After initially (in 1965) taking pioneering steps to establish a need for conservation with its logging code, if these laws change, this will be a retrograde step.Īnd the situation is looking dire. An international opposition is also quickly forming.Īlthough it has long held a reputation as an environmental leader, this is quickly being reversed. According AVAAZ, 79% of Brazilians support a veto of the forest law changes. The Amazon provides 20% of our oxygen and 60% of our freshwater. Losing the Amazon would tip the global climate into chaos with consequences for us all. Among the reforms, restrictions on clearing forests along rivers and on the tops of hills will be eased. It hasn’t however been passed yet in the Senate.

The lower house of Brazil’s parliament has passed a reform to their forest code that could mean vast tracts of the rainforest could be open to logging devastation. However in a sad reality, all of this natural beauty is under threat and could disappear and have huge effects nationally and globally. The Amazon in itself is an ecological puzzle, packed with so many different forms of life and natural gems. Brazil’s landscape is diverse and detailed with an ecological diversity that ranges from pristine beaches, buzzing cities, geographically unique mountain ranges to, of course, the bewildering Amazon rainforest. On par with the gorgeous people I met was the stunning and mind-blowing beauty of the environment.

Tabletalkers question: Do you think the Sri Lankan military deliberately targeted civilian so called ‘safe havens’ in their shelling attacks? Why do you think this was part of their plan?Īt the beginning of 2010, I went on an amazing adventure to Brazil. In one case, a Tamil Tiger suicide bomber detonated an explosive charge while standing in the middle of a ‘safe haven’ area for other Tamils. They used child soldiers and people were killed when they tried to leave the regime. The Tamil Tigers were ruthless, using civilians as human shields. Yet, even after this documentary, the Sri Lankan government still insists the war was conducted with a policy of “zero civilian casualties”. Even in war, there are laws and international human rights that prevent certain actions and behaviours. Some of the actions shown in the footage are not permissible under international law. Horrifically, the documentary reveals government forces shelling civilians who had been offered sanctuary in no fire zones. It also shows evidence of rape, torture and murder of civilians by the Sri Lankan government. However, the recent report by Four Corners shows credible evidence that up to 40,000 people were killed in the final months of the civil war between the Tamil Tigers and government forces when no one was looking. In the final stages of this war, the Sri Lankan government forced out all international and UN representatives so their final deeds could be done without the discerning eye of outsiders. The LTTE wanted land and to create an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka for Tamil people. The civil war was based on tension between the Sinhalesse majority and Tamil Separatists, who formed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). However, these days, such an escape comes bound with a bloody history and heart-wrenching atrocities.

Now, in 2011, things seem to have calmed down, and Sri Lanka is again becoming a holiday destination for those seeking an escape to a geographically stunning country. It exposed a military that completely disregarded humanitarian rights and committed numerous war crimes. No one with a heart could not have been affected by this program. This documentary was a harrowing revelation of the atrocities committed in this war from its beginning in 1983 to its end in 2009. You may have noticed the recent interest Sri Lanka after ABC’s Four Corners presented The Killing Fields.
